About this listen

'Abercrombie is in a class of his own' JOE HILL

'An incredibly fun, incredibly action-packed and, by the end, incredibly affecting book' TAMSYN MUIR

Europe stares into the abyss.

Plague and famine stalk the land, monsters lurk in every shadow and greedy princes care for nothing but their own ambitions. Only one thing is certain: the elves will come again, and they will eat everyone.

Sometimes, only the darkest paths lead towards the light. Paths on which the righteous will not dare to tread . . .

And so, buried beneath the sacred splendour of the Celestial Palace, is the secret Chapel of the Holy Expediency. For its congregation of convicted monsters there are no sins that have not been committed, no lines that will not be crossed, and no mission that cannot be turned into a disastrous bloodbath.

Now the hapless Brother Diaz must somehow bind the worst of the worst to a higher cause: to put a thief on the throne of Troy, and unite the sundered church against the coming apocalypse.

When you're headed through hell, you need the devils on your side.©2025 Joe Abercrombie (P)2025 Orion Publishing Group Limited

This book is peak Abercrombie. Great humour, character building and world building.

I'm glad this book turned out to be so good, I was worried about not having a new First Law book while waiting for this trilogy to finish but it's actually amazing that he can build such a good world without the constraints from the First Law's world. I can almost guarantee the people leaving bad reviews are just mad it's not what they expected and haven't even given it a real try. If you liked any of the First Law books, especially the standalone books, then you will love this.

I think it needed a cliff hanger

great book well delivered, felt like reading through a plot of cliché movie. The whole concept of the setting was executed perfectly. Great fun see Joe Abercrombie execute pure chaos.

Fresh & Familiar

With The Devils, it seems to me that Joe Abercrombie is shedding off some of the more complicated story elements from The First Law & Age of Madness series to focus on what he most enjoys writing. Characters.

The underlying story of The Devils seems purposefully simple, but that moves the spotlight onto its deeply engaging, hilarious, and at times tragic characters as they adventure through this new, higher fantasy world.

I loved my time with The Devils and look forward to the next entry in this series. Kudos again to Steven Pacey for his incredible performance.

In true Abercrombe fashion the characters all feel very distinct, interesting and real.

Would have liked it to be twice as long, but I will content myself with waiting for the next one

Brilliant, just brilliant!

Thank you Joe Abercrombie, for another fabulous story with more wonderful characters; and for Steven Pacey, the greatest narrator of them all whose delivery is faultless and whose voices are so individual and well thought out that I never want to stop listening. Dare I say this is shaping up to be even better than the First Law series, never thought I’d ever say that. Can’t wait for the next one.

Masterful

As always, Joe Abercrombie brings his A game. Well wrought, hideously likeable heroes on an epic god-blessed journey plagued by enemies, friends and monsters alike. Stephen Pacey adds more gravitas, depth and humour with his flawless narration of a tale filled with humour, wry observation, bloody battles and deadly church political chicanery. Six stars.

Khalid, “Another one”

Another classic banger by Joe Abercrombie! It smacks of modern tropes; the suicide squad, the last witch hunter, league of extraordinary gentlemen… it’s a fantastic mixture of comedy, tragedy and adventure. The twists are a little predictable to the veterans of historic fiction but it does not take any excitement from the story, nor does it over shadow the ADDED twists you don’t see coming. You’ll understand when you listen to this amazing piece of art! Enjoy

A joy to listen to

Everything I love about Abercrombie and Pacey. The characters are wretched and loveable, the humour makes me snort. The adventures are picaresque and the cynicism dripping. The descriptions are vivid. Everything is expertly brought to life by a master of voice. I enjoyed every minute.
